Meet H.E, Chief Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu

Chief Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu is the wife of the Executive Governor of Ondo State and the founder of the Foundation for Wives of Ondo State Officials and female political appointees (FOWOSO).

She graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), with a BSc in Zoology, and earned an MSc in Fisheries with a major in Aquaculture from the University of Philippines, Iloilo. She is a firm believer in continuing education and currently pursues additional academic qualifications (with graduation in view) in Health Promotion and Education (Master's) and Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology (Ph.D.) from the University of Ibadan and the Federal University of Technology, Akure, respectively.

She is the founder of the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN), a leading NGO that is galvanizing action against breast cancer in Nigeria through public education, patient support, advocacy, and research. She founded BRECAN in 1997 after her experience with breast cancer. She recognized the need to do something to effect positive and long-term change in Nigerian society, which was deeply entrenched in misconceptions about what causes breast cancer and how it can be treated. She has won several awards both locally and internationally for her work and commitment to the fight against breast cancer in Nigeria.

With her rare humanitarian disposition and concern for family and societal development, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu has given herself in service to others through her foundation, the Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu Foundation (BAAF), through which she continues to touch more lives and impact society. She harbors a huge passion for advancing and promoting literacy in children through programs such as Reading Is Fun, Essay competitions, and Spelling Bee competitions.

She is also committed to advancing women's social and economic status, as well as nurturing and heavily investing in young girls in ICT and solar energy technology in order to close the gender gap in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu is also developing talents in arts and sports and promoting improved sensitization in schools and communities, including qualitative education for the deaf.

H.E. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu single-handedly championed the call for greater participation of women in politics at all levels and the promotion of gender equity in governance. In 2017, she launched a crowdfunded project worth two hundred million naira ( N 200 million) to assist impoverished breast cancer patients in Nigeria.

Betty Anyanwu Akeredolu is a commercial fish farmer who also provides consulting services under the business name Aquatek Farms Ventures. She nurtured her career as a fisheries expert while working with the Federal Department of Fisheries and retired voluntarily after 28 years of diligent service. She forayed into partisan politics in 2007 and has been politically active.
